The December Bangor Greendrinks was a smashing success! Zeth and Betsy Lundy hosted the party at their new store, Central Street Farmhouse, in downtown Bangor. On the menu was a delicious Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, root beer, wine, cider, and more -- all made right on site. All of the brewing, wine making, and cheese making goes on on the first floor of the Lundy's three-story building. The second floor is baby-central. Organic clothes, cloth diapers, toys, and nursing bras galore -- all for the eco friendly mom. The Lundy's are renovating the third floor as their living space. Way to cut down on your commute guys!

Christmas by the Sea

This past weekend, Camden celebrated their annual Christmas by the Sea celebration. My mother, Mary, sister, Jennifer, and niece, Ayda headed down to put a little jingle in our step. Luckily the rain held off so we could walk around town without getting wet.

There were Christmas wreathes up on every lamppost and on most storefronts. I wish we had been there at night to see what kind of light display the town had. We just missed Santa Claus, so we stopped into Cappy's for some lunch before heading out to Cellardoor Winery's vineyard in Lincolnville to catch him there.

Bettina Doulton, owner of Cellardoor Winery, decked the halls to the nines, including this gorgeous Christmas tree. When we stopped by she was upstairs with a group of kids, helping them decorate cookies.

Ayda and Jenn were right into it--and the cookies were really yummy. Just as they finished who walked through the door? You guessed it -- Santa Claus!

Ayda, who is three-and-a-half, was very proud of herself for how close she got to the "man in red." He was very patient with all of the kids and just the right amount of jolly.

While the kids enjoyed activities upstairs, the grownups enjoyed wine pairings downstairs. It was a fun event and we look forward to doing it again next year. For more events in the Camden area this holiday season, visit www.camdenme.org.

In honor of Veterans Day, consulting editor Henry Garfield, sat down with three area veterans to find out what Veterans Day means to them. We'd like to introduce them and share some of their answers.

Do you think America is more or less patriotic today than it was during the time you served?

I think America today at least knows the truth of what's going on a little better. We're no longer blaming the military for things that go wrong. We know that the military is under command of the president and Congress. The right way to look at it is if you don't like it, your elected officials are the ones that are running it.

Was it hard to be back into the routine of everyday life when you returned home?

I came back with a bit of post traumatic stress disorder. I had a lot of anger because of the way the people who fought in Vietnam were treated when we got back. The news media made us look like we were baby-killers, bombing school buses, even though we were doing what we were assigned to do. It was ugly.

What does Veterans Day mean to you?

To me it is a day to show my respect and gratitude for all the sacrifices that veterans have made for our country.

What, in your opinion, are the best ways we can honor our veterans?

Don't be critical of them for doing what the civilian leadership directs them to do. Show your support in the community when you interact with members of the military.

Why did you join the military?

I was too young to go into the Second World War, and I felt like I hadn't done my duty. The Korean War came along, and I had a chance to be a man.

What would you like the average citizen to know about your military service?

I've reached a point in my life when I think that war is futile. We needed it 100 years ago, but it's no longer necessary. WE can be patriotic without going to war.

Last Friday, St Joe's Hospital held their annual fundraiser, disguised as a Venetian Masquerade Ball. The Bangor Civic Center was decked out to the nines. Hiking the Asticou Trail

On Sunday, Sidekick Shane and I headed down to MDI to meet up with my parents, Brian and Mary Ellen, for a fabulous fall hike. We headed onto the Park Loop Road and over to The Jordan Pond House to find the Asticou Trail. None of us had hiked it before, but my mom had found it in a book and wanted to try it.

It was a winding trail through the woods. Not great for leaf peeping views, but a nice hike nonetheless. The biggest downer? We didn't have a really good map to chart our way. One of the maps we had charted the Carriage Trails, the other charted some of the hiking trails. We should have just broken down and bought the hiking trail Acadia sells. That would have fixed our consternation as to what way we could go. Clearly I seem to know the way...

My mom wins the award for finding the coolest thing on the trail. She spotted this blaze orange crop of mushrooms, first thinking it was someone's hunting vest.

We would have given anything for a nice warm cup of lobster bisque and a couple of popovers at The Jordan Pond House -- but thanks to two cruise ships and leaf peeping season, the wait was 40 minutes. We headed into Bar Harbor for lunch instead.

This will probably be my last trip to Acadia until the snow flies. I just got a new ski jacket and gloves and I'm looking forward to getting cross country ski lessons on the Carriage Trails from my friend Nicole Ouellette this winter.

On Saturday morning, Shane Leonard and I hopped in my car and drove to Belfast. The reason? We were going to take photos and interview Elaine Tucker about her fabulous gingerbread cookies for our December magazine. We had a blast hanging out in her kitchen. The weather was gorgeous and we had an amazing view of the harbor from the huge windows in Elaine's house.

We don't want to give anything away...but these cookies were just to beautiful to not share with you. Elaine decorated this one to look like me! I think she did a pretty good job, too! To see more of her fancy cookie decorating skills you'll have to wait for our December issue. I promise, it'll be worth it!

I was so excited when we got our plaque for this year's Komen Race for the Cure. As soon as I can remember to bring in my hammer and nails from home it's going right up on our wall in the lobby where it belongs.

The Bangor Race broke the attendance record for the fifth year in a row. Over 5,600 participants helped raise over $300,000.00. THANK YOU to everyone who walk/ran/jogged/danced over the finish line.

Zipline Tour at Sunday River

This past weekend Sidekick Shane, our friend Nancy, and I met up in Bethel. Our mission? To tackle the new ziplines at Sunday River. For $40 you get to ride six ziplines partway down the mountain near the South Ridge Base Lodge.

While Saturday was sunny and unseasonably warm, Sunday was cool and wet. Ziplining is probably the most fun you can have in this sort of soggy weather. Our group of 12 adventurers were led by three guides who have been working the ziplines since they opened on August 7th. These three happy souls take three groups of people each day flying through the Maine woods. It's hard to hate your job when you get to have so much fun.

We geared up in the lodge and a bus drove us up to the top of the trail. We didn't even have to walk. This was definitely not a strenuous activity. "All thrills, no skills," the guides said. They couldn't have been more right. One of them hooked us on to the line at the start point and another person caught us at the other side. The third person worked the "brake" -- which was a rope attached to a wooden block that slowed you down at the very end. It was very safe and lots of fun.

Each tour consists of 6 lines ranging in length from 100 to 300 feet and you travel up to 25 mph. If you go, plan on spending 2 to 2.5 hours in the woods. All riders must be at least 3 feet tall and weigh between 70 to 270 pounds.

I was invited to a special career fair at Old Town High School today called "Passport to Your Future." The last time I was there it was 1996 and they were still known as the Indians. I was greeted and expertly taken care of by two wonderful OTHS students, Robbie and Kaylie, who gave me water, diet coke, and checked in on me throughout the day. Thanks guys!

I brought along copies of Bangor Metro, Maine Ahead, and Real Maine Weddings to give away. It seemed like the teachers were just as interested in what we do over at Bangor Metro world headquarters...especially in our recent feature on historical homes in the Bangor area...must have been history teachers.

Anyway. I was on hand to answer questions and talk a little bit about what goes into making a magazine. I got all sorts of questions:

Q: Do you take photos?
A: Sometimes...mostly if I'm the only one there with a camera. We have a photographer named Shane Leonard who handles most of that job.

Q: What kind of education do you need to work at a magazine?
A: Both of the editors of Bangor Metro (me) and Maine Ahead (Tori Britton) have master's degrees. It's important to go to college for sure - and while you're there you can start building up your portfolio of work and try out some internships. But you don't necessarily need a master's degree.

Q: How much money do you make?
A: That's none of your business! (I didn't really say that). I gave them a ballpark figure. Of course I live in Maine where the cost of living is much cheaper than, say, New York City. But if you're looking to get rich, going into journalism isn't going to help you get there quickly.

It was a fun day overall. I was just bummed I didn't get the chance to try out one of the go-carts brought in for the festivities by the National Guard. They were much more popular than my booth...and for good reason. Look how fun they are!

It's been a busy few days...so busy in fact that I didn't get a chance to post the weekly What's Happening list of weekend events. Shame on me! Thursday I left work early to head down to Portland to have dinner with a friend who just had her second child. I was up bright and early on Friday and spent the day spreading the news about Real Maine Weddings to vendors in the Kennebunk and Kennebunkport area. I spent the day in Kittery on Saturday and on Sunday, Sidekick Shane and I headed to MDI to do a little hiking.

Since both of us are out of shape, we didn't want to spend hours on a vigorous trail, but we wanted to get some exercise. We decided on hiking Parkman Mountain by Somes Sound.

The trail started out on the Carriage Roads and there were lots of people out with their bicycles and dogs enjoying the pre-fall weather. Parkman Mountain is 941 feet high and we had amazing views once we reached the top. After lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at the top, we decided to loop around and follow the trail to the peak of Bald Mountain (974 feet) right next door before heading back down to the parking lot.

The leaves were just starting to turn this weekend so the foliage wasn't near it's peak. But give it a couple more weeks and try the hike for yourself. It took us about an hour and a half to do the whole loop, which was a little over two miles. And it was definitely worth all the sore muscles we both have today.

The "Black Ghost" of Maine

In honor of the hunting guide who was mauled by a bear earlier this week, I'd like to tell you about a neat event the Bangor Land Trust has planned for next weekend...a Bear Walk!

Join the Bangor Land Trust and amateur naturalist Ryan Robbins in search of a Maine black bear in the Walden-Parke Preserve in Bangor. Robbins has been documenting black bears in and around Rolland F. Perry City Forest and the Walden-Parke Preserve for the last 5 years to learn more about Maine's most mysterious and often feared mammal.

Learn about black bear biology, behavior, and misconceptions. You will also learn now to identify bear signs in order to track their travels. The walk will be about 2.5 miles round trip. Participants are asked to bring along a flash light and to please leave their dogs at home.

The walk will start at 4 pm on September 25 (rain date September 26) at the BLT kiosk at the end of Tamarack Trail. For more info please contact Deb DeForest at 942-1010. Happy hunting!

Directions: Go north on Essex St. about 4 miles from the intersection with Stillwater Ave., passing Church Rd. on your left. Democratic candidate, Libby Mitchell, along with the trio of Independent candidates, Eliot Cutler, Shawn Moody, and Kevin Scott have confirmed their attendance. We're not quite sure about Paul LePage yet but regardless, it's your chance to hear how our next governor intends to protect and promote Maine's productive landscapes, vital downtowns, distinct cultural heritage, and more.

Thanks to our publisher, Mark Wellman, the day went off without a hitch and Christine was pleased as punch. Thanks again to the Lucerne Inn and Acadia Limo for making this the best Tuesday ever!

Christine had no idea where we were taking her. Once she realized we were having lunch at the Lucerne she got a little emotional.

What's better than a champagne lunch on a Tuesday? Not much...

Meadowlark Music Camp

Yesterday I drove to the tiny town of Washington to take photos at Meadowlark Music Camp on the shore of Washington Pond. Seventy-five people, mostly adults, spent the week practicing the banjo, harp, dulcimer, flute, fiddle, guitar, voice, and more. See some of my photos after the jump...

It was a gorgeous day to spend at camp and I spent most of it wandering around and taking photos for a feature I'm planning on writing next year. But waiting a whole year to share some of the photos I took seems silly -- so here they are!

I had never watched someone play the dulcimer before, and it was mesmerizing. Such a beautiful instrument!

There's something about playing music in the woods that is just so...Maine.

Some campers squeezed in a swim between lunch and the afternoon workshop.

Sidekick Shane surprised me with tickets for a ride on the Katahdin steamship this past weekend. It was a 3 hour tour around Moosehead Lake and a ton of fun. He got the tickets at WVII's Half Off Store so we saved a bunch of money -- which was also fun.

It was a beautiful day to be on the water -- no matter what sort of boat you were in. These kids looked like they were having a blast!

Yesterday Shane Leonard and I grabbed our cameras and drove to Montville to check out Maine Fiddle Camp. My friend, Anne Mostue, and her sister were attending this year and I thought a music camp for adults and families was too cool to not visit. So I did.

As we drove into the camp we could hear the music before we even saw it. While the camp started out with lessons in fiddle only, today had a much more diverse tune. There were groups of fiddles for sure, but also accordions, guitars, mandolins, banjos, cellos, pianos, and harmonicas.

There were students that looked no older than 5 playing next to octogenarians. Some people were experts while some were picking up their instrument after years of neglect. Campers are split into groups depending on their ability and everyone learns songs the old fashioned way -- by ear. No sheet music is used at fiddle camp.

Shane and I spent a few hours walking around, taking photos, and talking to people. It was very peaceful and everyone had a smile on their face and an instrument in their hands.

RetroRockerz drew in crowds of people for the last Cool Sounds Concert Series and Outdoor Market in Downtown Bangor – bringing in the largest audience of the series for its last week.

Rocking Horses love RetroRockerz, too! Don Bailey began making rocking horses for his 13 grandchildren 2 years ago, when he found himself with extra time on his hands. Bailey then made them for the great grandchildren, and now makes them to order [dbailey17@tds.net]. Why? “I love doing it,” said Bailey.

Bilykbuttons, also found at the Antiques Marketplace on Main Street, produces unique designs from barrettes to flowers – all using buttons! Janet Bilyk started up this summer and plans to expend to etsy.com. Luckily, she has at least a pound of buttons to use!

It’s clear that Bangor loves RetroRockerz! Their feel good tunes from the 50s to the 70s had people packing into Pickering Square and one their feet.

Their clean classic rock sound brings them all around the greater Bangor area and beyond – offering something for all ages. No one can resist tapping their toes to the beat. RetroRockerz was a perfect ending to 2010’s Cool Sounds Concert Series.

Cool Sounds Concert Series brought Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys to West Market Square this week – with the sun pushing the rain away once again!

Julie L. Moonlight of Moonlight Adornments designs beautiful jewelry out of the common material you can find in your house – guitar picks, scrabble tiles, dominoes, etc. While teaching crafts at the Charlotte White Center in Dover Foxcroft, Moonlight kept an eye out for inexpensive projects. Her knack for making the ordinary extraordinary offers lots of designs to choose from.

Maine By Mainers was founded to help troubled youth in Northeast Maine, and produces quilts and tote bags with Maine photographs. Photos are donated by Maine artists and made into quality cloth images – which are also sold for quilting and other crafts.

Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys played a dynamic set of original bluegrass tunes for an audience packed into Pickering Square. With strong vocals, harmonies and fast picking, the Plowboys knew how to get people on their feet and to have a good time!

There’s only one night of the 2010 Cool Sounds Concert Series left! Come to Downtown Bangor Thursday, July 29th to catch the RetroRockerz and the Outdoor Market on Broad Street.

This week’s Cool Sounds Concert Series showcased the Bangor area’s talented youth with the Teen Jamboree! Four acts shared the stage last night, each bringing their own unique sound.

On top of foods and jewelry, the Outdoor Market offers clothing too. Silk N Hand screenprinting has fun graphic tees to choose from. Owner Orion started up the business 4 months ago after a layoff as a contractor. Orion set up camp in his basement, and makes his way to markets such as this one. Part of the money goes to the Flannel Shirt Fund, teaching children where their food comes from.

There not just clothes for you, but for your dog, too! Dogn’i Apparel (the Home of Custom Pet Apparel) began a few years ago, when full time insurance agent Cynthia Rollins needed a creative outlet. Inspired in part by her two pet terriers Jack & Jill, Rollins combined two of her passions – pets and clothing.

Emily Guillow from Hampden started off the show with “Landslide” (originally by Fleetwood Mac, and covered by the Dixie Chicks) on her acoustic guitar. She has played & sang for 7 years, and began her solo career last year. Guillow’s cool sound ranged from a slowed down “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” to Kanye’s “Heartless.”

Matthew Henley Bush began playing piano at the age of four, inspired by his ragtime playing grandfather. Bush performed covers as well as an original piece.

Maximum Blue began playing violin at age 6, and performing in public at 9. As a guitar/fiddle duo with his father, Max has many musical accomplishments – playing at large venues with professional musicians and has recorded 4 CDs. Max’s skilled bluegrass, old-time, maritime, and newgrass got everyone dancing, especially the kids.

Ray Costlow sings like she’s been performing in smokey late night jazz bars for 20 years, but she’s only in 7th grade! Costlow sings and plays bass, accompanied by a couple of friends, and has won many talent contests. Playing covers like Michael Jackson’s “Black or White,” Costlow ended the night on a high note.

Each month in Maine Ahead magazine we feature a working Mainer. Nicole Ouellette, owner of Breaking Even Communications in Bar Harbor, is our featured Mainer for our August issue. Space constraints kept us from publishing all of her fabulous answers, so I'm going to publish them here. If you're interested in learning more about social media networking from a smart, young whippersnapper...read on. For more on social media networking, pick up a copy of our August issue.

What is it that you do...exactly?

I provide internet marketing services to small businesses and non-profits including social media, email newsletters, and blogging.

I maintain business Facebook pages and Twitter accounts; write content for websites and blogs; create email newsletters; produce internet marketing plans for businesses to follow (or have me do for them); and teach workshops about technology topics.

How best to do this, including how I communicate with business owners about it, is something I'm always working to improve.

How can small businesses benefit from your services?

There's this great (often free or low cost) technology out there that can help business owners do more with the Internet. The frequent use of social media websites, the ease of software to create and share content, and the low cost of online advertising have all helped to level the playing friend for small businesses online, which is great.

These technologies can be used to address business challenges specifically in the state of Maine that has a largely spread-out population and a seasonal economy. These two issues don’t allow business owners the luxury of hoards of foot traffic on a continual basis. The Internet allows your business to get in front of more people who don't necessarily walk or drive by and to stay in touch with farther flung but still enthusiastic customers as well as locals.

I do a lot of reading, experimenting with my own site, and talking with other people in my field about what works well. If I can share this knowledge with a small business or non-profit and help them be a bit more successful, help them make more money so they can create one job or stay open two months longer than their normal season, that's not only great for that business but for the community and overall economy of Maine.

How did you learn how to do this?

It all started when I was working at Vinalhaven School several years ago. A partnership with the Island Institute and CO-SEED created my position, which was to help teachers create place-based education projects at the school. I found myself learning more about the Internet and technology and helping kids and teachers use both on cool projects.

When I moved to Ellsworth a few years ago, I got a job at the Ellsworth American. "I don't know much about websites," I told Chris Crockett, the IT Manager. "We can teach you," he said. The next two years were a crash course in Joomla, Photoshop, HTML coding, Sony Vegas, blogging, and, most importantly, customer relations. On the side, I had started my own blog and when a local business owner asked me to help with her blog, I got the green light since the EA didn't provide those services. I filled in with my services with what I thought business owners needed in terms of help online. I started a side business writing web content and consulting on blogs. I started using social media to promote my blog and soon, that was part of my services too. I started slowly and, over the course of a year and a half, found that I had the client base, experience, knowledge, business sense, and people skills to at least try going out on my own.

How do you stay motivated working from home?

Two things keep me motivated to get up and do what I need to do every day: 1) bills (the immediate need to pay them) and 2) goals (looking at where I'll be in the next 3-5 years). I keep telling myself I'm working hard now so I have a stable income doing something I love the rest of my working life, and eventually I can create good jobs in Maine for other people like me who want to stay.

My office is visible from most every part of my small house, continuously reminding me that I actually could work more. This translates for me into working more than I would if I had a separate office space. So the better question might be how do I delineate between working and non-working time and even over a year later, that's still hard.

I try to take one full day a week away from the computer. I make plans with friends and get out of the house nights and weekends. Maintain office hours but take a break most days to walk my dog. I try to live a full life away from the computer so that when I am working, I'm focused and refreshed.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up at 7 and put on a pot of coffee and check my email. Baring some kind of crisis needing immediate attention, I listen to MPBN for news while I get household chores done. I get down to business by 9 am at the latest.

Most days, I'm in my home office, working typical office hours 8 am to 5 pm on the weekdays. About 2-4 times a week, I have an in person meeting with a client, meaning I'm on the road for half a day with my cell phone and laptop in tow to get business done before and after. I try to schedule a few meetings back to back in the same town if I can to save on travel and maximize my work time. Meals are breaks and I usually put in an hour or two of work after dinner, either blogging or catching up on email. Also usually one afternoon a weekend is spent tying up loose ends and planning for the coming week. As you'd guess, most of my working life takes place in front of a computer.

You also offer your services in French—when did you learn to parlez-vous Français?

I grew up in Fort Kent and my father, who ran the local hardware store until he passed away a few years ago, conducted business in both English and French. I asked him once what the breakdown was like and he said about 50-50. Speaking French for me is beyond a personal connection to my history and family; I always have believed that knowing another language allows you to talk to more people; gives you better perspective on the world; makes your brain smarter; and your heart more compassionate.

Je pense que c'est important de prendre conscience de l'historie francophone au Maine. Et je ne parle pas seulement du passé mais maintenant. Aussi, en offerant des services en français, comme enterprise, j'espére que je semble plus ouverte envers les individus et les entreprises en Noveau Brunswick, en Québec, et dans les autres régions francophones. Peut-être ceux qui parlent français seront plus à l'aise s'ils peuvent travailler avec quelqu'un qui parle leur langue et comprendre comment développer un site Web bilingue. (Note: Melanie has no idea what this means.)

It will become more important, as we all get more connected, to offer services to people who communicate in different languages or, at the very least, live in different cultures. I'm working on my first bilingual website right now which is a lot of fun and a great challenge for me. I need to get better about marketing my bilingual services.

What have been some of your favorite projects?

The redesign of the bilingual site I mentioned is one (Franco-American Oral History Archives) that is currently in process. It's going to be a compiling of historic photographs, video, audio, etc. but offering the material in an accessible way in two languages is an interesting challenge. Also organizing that much content can be overwhelming. I just watched an interview the other day with one of my mentors, Marie-Anne Gauvin, who passed away a few years ago. It'll be rewarding to get this media online and accessible to everyone.

Another project that has been a favorite is my work the Herring Alliance. It's easy for people to care about dolphins and whales (the cute creatures of the ocean) but trying to reach out to the average person about the little fish the cute creatures eat is a tougher sell. The Herring Alliance has some great people working there and they were my first ever 'big' client. I get to do a lot of different things with them and they really seem to value my contributions, which always makes me want to work harder on something. To have an organization of that scale take a chance on me in those early days really means a lot and is something I won't forget whether I can continue to work with them in 2011 or not.

Probably the most interesting project though is this series of workshops I've started with a friend. It seems there is an underserved group of small business owners and non-profit administrators who wanted to learn about internet and technology topics, yet I couldn't get anyone to sign up for my adult education classes about them. My friend Annie suggested having the professional development opportunities happen over the course of one day. People didn't want to commit to four classes but they would commit to an afternoon or evening, and that made the light bulb go off.

Now I have people skills and some of the technical knowledge to pull this off but I knew I needed more technical knowledge. Enter Matt Baya, co-owner of Svaha LLC (a web design and hosting company) and a super nice guy. We're in month four of Downeast Learning: Claws-on Technology Workshops in Downeast Maine. We partnered with the Maine Grind, which is a great space in terms of technology capacity, having a pleasing environment with food options, and being centrally located in Ellsworth. As people get used to Downeast Learning Workshops being regular events at the Maine Grind, Matt and I help more people and generate a regular source of revenue for our respective businesses.

How do you stay on top of ever-changing technology?

I remind clients that I don't know it all. I do know enough to help business owners in terms of reaching their target market and saving them time and money, but even I don't do everything, marketing-wise. For example, I have no interest in Foursquare, not because I don't think it's cool to have location-based technology or that it has no application in business but because, as someone who lives/works alone, it becomes possibly a safety issue for me.

I would say I spend 25% of my work hours reading articles, talking with people, and otherwise trying to stay ahead of the curve. People hire me because I'm supposed to stay on top of internet marketing, social media, search engine optimization, and other internet topics of concern and the least I can do is know what I'm talking about.

Should every business have a blog, Facebook page, and/or a Twitter account?

I think every business can use the Internet somehow, but if there was one guaranteed solution I think all of us business owners, myself included, would be doing it.

It's all about taking what a business has and what a business owner likes (and doesn't like) to do and starting with that. For example, I've worked with real estate people who have been in the business for years and have thousands of email contacts. Let's use that! Or people who say 'Look, Nicole, I don't have time to blog but I do like reading and sharing articles." Horray for Twitter! If everyone did all the possible things they could do, they wouldn't have time to actually run their business.

I say pick one or two marketing strategies and be excellent at those. And I think everyone should keep on top of what people are saying about you online with something like Google Alerts so you are in the position to react when something positive or negative being said about you. There is no need to do it all, just do something!

Can you teach old dogs new tricks?

You know, I adopted this old beagle mix four years ago named Sadie. When I first got her, she was naughty. She got in the trash, ate things she wasn't supposed to, and otherwise drove me crazy initially. But over time, she learned new tricks, but I also adjusted my expectations. She stopped going in the trash but I conceded that maybe, she'd never learn the command 'stay'.

I think a combination of learning new trick and adjusting expectations needs to happen for everyone to be happy, in business and other relationships. Personally, I hope I'm never done learning... but I guess you can call me up when I'm 90 and see how I'm doing on that.

What do you like most about your job?

Finding the right job can feel like trying to find that right person you want to live your life with. It's difficult, and trial and error doesn't necessarily work in terms of a strategy.

Until this past year, I wasn't sure if I could find a job that I was good at and also enjoyed. The things I like tend to be challenging for me. But I like that with my business, I get to help small businesses and non-profits, learn new things, analyze data, network with people, and be creative everyday. I have found 'the one', the job I've always wanted to exist for me. Apparently, I just had to create it.

Cool Sounds Concert Series: Evergreen

Evergreen had listeners on their feet last Thursday at the Cool Sounds Concert Series and Outdoor Market with blues, bluegrass, and swing!

A four part band, Evergreen is comprised of Steve Chiasson, Chris Prickitt, Nel Kennedy and Joe Kennedy. Their performance spanned old time country music, bluegrass, blues and folk.

Stone Soup Collaborative is a regular vendor at the Outdoor Market, selling farm fresh eggs, organic vegetables and herbs from local farms Hearthfire Hill and Abundant Acre Farm. You can just stop by and pick up a recipe.

“[We have recipes] because people don’t always know what to do with the produce we offer,” says Anne Sheerman of Abundant Acres. According to Sheerman, half the battle of getting people to buy local and organic food is education.

A couple of weeks ago I had an idea. Wouldn't it be cool if we had a way to put local people on fake covers of Bangor Metro? Wouldn't it be cool if we had some sort of cover frame that we could take to events? I decided to pick my dad's brain about it. He's a carpenter by trade and can make just about anything you can imagine.

We talked over what I wanted and how he thought it would work and he whipped up a fake Bangor Metro cover frame in no time. We decided to debut it at last night's Business After Hours at The Charles Inn.

What is a potato blossom anyway?

The Potato Blossom Festival kicks off in Fort Fairfield this weekend and I bet many of you have never even seen a potato blossom. I'm here to change that. Last year I went up to the Potato Blossom Festival to check them out for myself. It was my first real trip up to "the county" for work. The weather wasn't spectacular, but the views were amazing.

Both sides of practically every route and road in Aroostook County this time of year are flushed with potato blossoms, which come in shades ranging from white to pink to purple. Some stretched as far as the eye could see. That's a lot of potatoes, folks.

There's a lot to do during the week long event including the crowning of the Potato Blossom Queen and Little Miss Potato Blossom, a community market, cowboy wild west round up, spaghetti dinner, live music, and plenty of activities for the kids.

Cool Sounds Concert Series: Blue Northern

Blue Northern brought bluegrass to Bangor for the fourth week of the Cool Sounds Concert Series, performing to families and their dogs under a rainbow in Pickering Square.

Broad Street was filled with vendors for the outdoor market. It’s Angela Mitchell of Earth & Sky Designs fourth year in the market, where she sells jewelry crafted with high quality materials.

There’s not only handcrafted jewelry, but handcrafted Adirondack chairs! Four-C’s Adirondack Chairs is a family business (named after family members’ initials). Crystal Kane - who has made chairs for three years, learned from her father - who had made chairs for over 30 years.

Blue Northern is bluegrass from Blue Hill – specifically a five piece band playing traditional, original, and contemporary acoustic music. Their smooth sound echoed through the square, giving an authentic down-home feeling to downtown Bangor.

Blue Northern features guitar, upright bass, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, octave mandolin and tenor guitar, plus group vocals, and performs covers as well as original pieces.

Sweet Treat for the 4th of July

Are you looking for a sweet treat to bring to a 4th of July picnic this weekend? I think I might have found just what you are looking for in the Bangor Metro archives. I was looking through our older magazines for a certain recipe and stumbled upon Ramey's Raspberry Cake Rolls. I love fresh berries -- they're even tastier when I can pick them myself. It's not quite raspberry season yet, but I'm a sucker for anything raspberry. And jelly rolls are really fun to make. Don't let on how easy it is -- let your family and friends think you're a culinary genius.

Ingredients:
Cake:
5 eggs, separated
1 cup sugar
1 1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt

Raspberry filling:
1 pint fresh or frozen raspberries
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup water
1/4 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
pinch of salt

Whipped cream:
1 pint cream
1/4 cut sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cake: Beat the egg yolks until lemon-colored. Add sugar slowly, beating until creamy. Beat in the vanilla. Sift the flour and baking powder, and gradually add it to the egg mixture beating until just smooth. Beat the egg whites and salt until stiff, but not dry. Fold into the batter. Line a 15 1/2" x 10 1/2" x 1" jelly roll pan (or similar-size cookie sheet) with well-greased parchment or brown paper. Spread the batter evenly in the pan and bake in 375°F oven for 15 minutes or until top springs back when lightly touched. When done, invert
immediately on a clean kitchen towel sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar. Trim off crusty edges. Starting from the short side, roll up in the towel. Cool.

Raspberry filling: In a 2 quart or larger pot, bring all ingredients to a boil and then stew for 5 to 6 minutes on medium heat. Make a thin paste of about 5 Tbs. cornstarch and about an equal amount of water. Drizzle enough of this mixture into the boiling berries, stirring constantly until almost like soft jam. Continue cooking for 1 minute. Remove from heat. The mixture will thicken more as it cools.

Whipped cream: While waiting for the cake rolls and filling to cool, whip cream, adding sugar and vanilla until the whipped cream is stiff enough to spread. There will be some leftover whipped cream for topping the cake roll slices when serving.

Filling the cake roll: Unroll the cooled cake. Spread layer of cold berry filling over cake, being careful not to overfill. Spread layer of whipped cream over berry layer. Re-roll and place seam side down. Refrigerate. Cut and serve with whipped cream.

You might think that it's weird for an independent senior living facility to host an art exhibit -- but they hold them all the time. Their most recent exhibit featured dozens of handmade quilts by area quilters that were out of this world exquisite!

But back to the cartoons....

There are a bunch of Maine cartoonists and illustrators on display including our very own Mark Ricketts! Other illustrators include George Danby and and Chris Peary from the Bangor Daily News, Michael Fisher and Steven Meyers from the Portland Press Herald, Joe Marshall from The Islander, and Josh Alves from The Weekly.

Cool Sounds Concert Series: Flash! In The Pans

The wind and rain ended in time for the third week of this year’s Cool Sounds Concert Series in Pickering Square. Flash! In The Pans performed and Court Street filled with vendors on both sides.

There is a lot of foods to try at the outdoor market. No Gluten for Punishment has many different kinds of treats that are – you guessed it – gluten-free. Try Stephanie Courtemanche and Andria Francisco’s marshmallow squares or cinnamon rolls.

Look for a crowded table infront of the Whig and Courier, and you’ll find Daily Bread of Levant. For about five years, Daily Bread has been creating interesting flavored breads, like spinach cheddar, garlic dill, chocolate swirl, as well as flat breads and other bread products.

Pickering Square vibrated with the rhythmic stylings of the Blue Hill steel drum band, Flash! In The Pans. The audience danced and played tambourines, picking up every beat drummers put down.

The popular group consists of approximately 35 musicians, ranging, from students to professionals to retirees. Many members have little to no musical background, as steel pans are considered generally easy to learn.

Come by next week and catch Blue Northern, and see what sweet treats are waiting for you in the outdoor market.

Old Stories Breathe New Life

Back when Bangor Metro first began, we had a guest opinion in every issue. One of the most informative and provocative ones was called How Great Northern Paper Company Fell, Part 1 and Part 2. We encourage you to read this fascinating story, from one man’s point of view.

Each year, we still hear from people who read the piece. Today -- five years after its publication -- we received the following email from Wayne Hockmeyer, who was mentioned in Woodbury’s article. Hockmeyer founded Northern Outdoors in the late 70s. His view lends another must-read perspective.

Here is his Wayne Hockmeyer’s email (it's a bit long, but worth the read):

I read with interest the article by David A. Woodbury entitled "How Great Northern Paper Company Fell". Bangor Metro magazine, August 2005. It is a tragic story and one with which I have many regrets.

I would like to set the record straight on his mention of "Hockmeyer's group never explained how it was environmentally friendly for 30,000 rafters (his estimate) to leave their bodily waste along the riverbank each summer."

The truth is that we carried out all our human waste every day in portable porta-potties. We caused no measurable environmental damage at all. A rubber raft cannot wear out the water, however, environmental damage was never the real issue with those of us in the whitewater rafting industry.

We were business people who were about to lose our businesses if Big A dam was to be built. I, and the majority of raft company owners, did not want to get in a fight with Great Northern Paper Company. I knew that they intended to build the dam before Great Northern even publicly announced their intentions to build the dam.

I asked Great Northern for a meeting to discuss ways in which we could work together to avoid a dam fight. I proposed to them that they release water flows in the "dry way", the section of river immediately below Ripogenous Dam that had been dried up when they diverted the river underground to the MaCay Station Power House over a mile down river. I said that if they would release water on Saturday and Sunday mornings only, we could run weekend trips and pay them $6.00 per head. I knew that this head fee generated more money than the electricity created by the water flow.

I asked that we be given campsites on the new lake that would be created by the Big A dam. We could have lunch on these campsites and then bus our customers around the Big A dam and continue our raft trip on the section of river below that was unaffected by the new dam. I pointed out that it would be very good for the economy of the area and we could work together to publicly promote the benefits of cooperation between business and outdoor wilderness recreation. I said we could both have what we wanted and avoid conflict. I did not like or want the dam, but I understood the importance of the dam and the economy of northern Maine.

A large number of Great Northern executives were at the meeting. What I did not understand was the fact that Great Northern did not want to encourage more public use on their land. They had been generous in allowing public use of their land in exchange for very low taxes. They were, however, not interested in encouraging more recreation. They viewed public recreation as a problem that they accepted for creating good public relations. The company policy was to limit any great increases in recreational use. The ideas that I proposed fell on deaf ears.

Great Northern also did not feel that they had to compromise with anyone. They were the largest, most powerful company in the State of Maine and the idea that they had to accommodate a bunch of small whitewater raft outfitters was absurd. They dismissed me and said I could not put my rafts in at MaCay Station, which would have essentially eliminated the best whitewater section of the river from my trip. Denying access to the upper river was illegal, but Great Northern was relying on local law enforcement to back them up. The truth is that they simply did not understand that the world was changing and misunderstood that environmental issues were no longer local, but encompassed a large number of out of state organizations that looked for causes to generate money and membership to grow themselves.

I loved the wilderness and everything it represented, but I also realized that man, by necessity, has had to harness and exploited the earth's natural resources. I have always seen man as a part of nature, not an intruder. It is not realistic to think that Maine could lock up a vast wilderness area as a "park". I was a conservationist, not an environmentalist, who sees any development as abhorrent and a sin against nature. I believe truth in any matter is in the middle not in the extremes. However, I needed to build a coalition other interests.

When Great Northern rejected my proposal I knew that I had no choice but to fight, and events quickly became very nasty. I was aware that I, myself, could never stop Big A.

Brownie Carson was not responsible for stopping the Big A dam. His Natural Resource Council of Maine had repeatedly refused to take on the Big A dam fight. It was the Whitewater Rafting Industry itself that raised large sums of money and thousands of letters of protest from our customers to the editor of Maine newspapers.

It was the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine that saw a valuable fishery about to be destroyed and took up our cause. It was a very difficult position for them to take because they always had very good relations with Great Northern. It was only when The Natural Resource Council of Maine saw the growth of Sam's membership and the money that we funneled into that organization, that the Natural Resource Council of Maine came to us and said that they had decided to join the fight and would bring in all the major environmental groups in the East.

They also said that the outfitters had to personally guarantee to raise a minimum of $50,000 and sign agreements to be personally responsible for any short fall.

We also had to agree to sell T-shirts for them on all our trips, sign up members to the coalition, give them our mailing lists to raise money, and run special trips for them as fundraisers. We were not rich and this was a big commitment for all the rafters.

The environmental organizations took up the fight because that was where the money was. They were envious of SAM's success.

The raft industry had successfully bought the muscle to fight the dam, but I never envisioned the destruction that would follow.

The fight eventually turned into the biggest environmental and political issue in Maine history. It resulted in ruining my personal reputation, Great Northern losing its dam and national environmental organizations becoming involved in Maine politics. It ultimately became very damaging to the whitewater industry.

The coalition to stop the dam was made up of strange bedfellows. Many members of the environmental movement believed that the raft companies should be restricted in size based on their own belief that too many people in the wilderness is bad. The fact that 99% of our customers had little idea of the number of people on the river and we had almost 100% customer satisfaction was unimportant to them. The very idea that we needed to run a certain number of people to be profitable and run successful companies that could pay our employees decent salaries was not justification to make money in their church.

We were increasingly uncomfortable with them and asked that if we lost the fight, that Great Northern be forced to mitigate our damages by putting water in the "dry way" on weekends.

The environmentalists said that admitting Great Northern could mitigate anything would weaken our dam fight. If we lost, we would lose everything. They said there would be no water in the "dry way".

Their position was the "dry way" was unrunnable. Since I had run the "dry way" a number of times on high water, I told them that their position was a lie and the raft industry would not willingly go out of business if we should lose the fight. I asked them if they would also close their doors if we lost. They said they were different from a business. I reminded them that we had raised the money to save our businesses and they were not willing to save the river unless we raised the money for them. It was hypocrisy on a grand scale. They threatened us with "you are all wearing white hats, if you pull out we will put black hats on all your heads." They refused to allow mitigation if we lost.

They said they had our mailing lists and would tell our own customers that we had sold out and to raft only with the company's that took their position that the "dry way" was unrunnable.

The idea that mass mailings from our own mailing lists would recommend the companies that accepted their terms proved to be irresistible to the sleaziest outfitters and they stayed with the coalition. The majority of outfitters were outraged by the threats, the bullying, and the violation of our agreement that our mailing lists would only be used for the purpose of raising money.

I am proud to say that they stuck together and we dropped out of the coalition and went to Great Northern and said we did not support the dam, but would not fight it any longer if they would work with us. Great Northern agreed, but it was too late for them to prevail. The dam was lost and the bitterness and enemies that had been created due to the fight would go on long after the fight was over. There were large numbers of environmentalists in state government in many different regulatory departments. The newspapers that bought newsprint from Great Northern were unhappy about the death of the dam.

As the point man and voice in the whitewater industry I became number one enemy of the environmentalists. They sent people from every bureaucrat department in Augusta to write up violations on my company. It was never ending, year after year, in a desperate attempt to stop my success. Eventually this led to legislation that tried to make all whitewater companies equal.

The whitewater industry itself was severely damaged and its potential economic benefit to the State of Maine crippled by government intervention that attempted to limit the free enterprise system under the guise of environmental protection. It affected all the people who worked for whitewater rafting companies and greatly limited the overall quality of the Maine whitewater experience to the people who came to raft. Government cannot legislate success or make people equal. Business is supposed to be about serving the public best, not about protecting those who can only muster up an inferior competitive product.

Government never produces wealth and never will. It devours wealth and only seeks to protect those who work for it. It is run by people who have never produced more than they consume.

One hundred thousand Maine people left the State last year because there was no opportunity to make a decent life. It is very sad because Maine is unique in its natural recreational resources. Its educational system is very poor, its taxes exorbitant, and its regulation of every aspect of business development and practice is extreme.

The truth is that Great Northern made mistakes that cost them the dam. In retrospect they should have been allowed to build the dam because of the number of ordinary people who depended on the company to make a living. The unions made mistakes by demanding more money than the company could afford. It was the government that gave the unions the power to commit suicide. The federal government created tax laws that forced businesses to behave in an irrational manner and refuse to carry inventory.

What is really sad is that Maine people are very decent hard working people that deserve better, but they have chosen to trust in government and government has never served the people who put their trust in it. It is impossible because government can never create anything, it can only consume and take away. America itself is on the verge of economic collapse. Government always enslaves any society that believes it is a benevolent entity that seeks to act in the interests of its citizens. All the good intentions in the world are meaningless if they are destructive.

I left Maine in the hope that my absence might allow Northern Outdoors to escape the constant attempts to destroy it. It never made a difference. The industry itself has been in constant decline because of the misguided government regulation that serves no one.

The fall of Great Northern was caused by government laws and regulation. It was also caused by events beyond its control. They came under increased competition from companies that were located in milder climates and did not have to own 2 million acres of land in a cold harsh environment. It was also caused because Great Northern did not understand the winds of change that occurred during the 1960s. If they had compromised with the raft companies, Big A would have been built.

It is easy to use hindsight after the past has played out. I understand why they made the decisions they did at the time. I regret that my arguments were not persuasive enough at the time.

There were no winners over the Big A dam fight. Everyone paid a dear price.

I could tell you much more that happened during that time and after the fight, but they are only negative and destructive. It was conflict between the political left and right.

I can only hope that the great north wilderness of Maine is not gobbled up by government. I miss it very much and hate to think that it could be locked up in an unproductive manner, run by goody two shoes who see man as incompatible with wilderness.

A Sunset Sail on the Margaret Todd

When Sidekick Shane finished his master's thesis at UMaine this spring I bought him a present -- a sunset sail for two on the schooner Margaret Todd that sails out of Bar Harbor. I have to admit, I really wanted to take this trip. I've spent a lot of time in Bar Harbor and have longed to sail on this majestic ship -- taking Shane gave me a reason to finally do it.

This past Friday was 90+ degrees out and made for a fantastic night to sail. The ship holds 150 passengers are there were just over 100 of us aboard. The crew asked for volunteers to help raise the four sails and Shane obliged. I, however, was too busy taking photos. Plus I'm really wimpy.

The views were amazing but what I really loved were the details.

All of the cruises on the Margaret Todd are dog-friendly and passengers are encouraged to bring aboard snacks and drinks -- we were jealous that another couple was having a lovely picnic of wine and cheese.

The best part of the trip? The sunset, of course! Kayakers took advantage of the good weather and took a sunset trip of their own.

Cool Sounds Concert Series: The Kayla Wass Band

The sun came out Thursday for the Cool Sounds Concert Series! This week, West Market Square filled up with lawn chairs to hear country tunes performed by The Kayla Wass Band.

The outdoor market had some really unique items for sale. Ymir Glass Design makes their jewelry out of Dichroic glass – a quartz coating, originally developed by NASA, that transmits one color and reflects another.

Rising Moon offers custom jewelry as well, using silver, crystal, stone, antlers, feathers and more!

The Kayla Wass Band drew in the crowds with country ballads and songs to tap your feet to!

They performed something for everyone with both new country favorites and traditional country classics. Kayla covered hits by Lady Antebellum, Gretchen Wilson, Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.

Come down to the West Market Square next Thursday to hear Flash! in the Pans – a steel drum band from Blue Hill – and to check out local goods at the outdoor market.

Are you a history buff? Or maybe someone looking for fun in the Bangor area? Look no further than Downtown Bangor. The Bangor Museum and Center for History is hosting the Mount Hope Cemetery and Ghost Lamp Tours two days each month from June to October.

Mount Hope Cemetery Tours

Mount Hope Cemetery, 1836, is the second oldest garden cemetery in the United States. The cemetery was designed, like Mount Auburn Cemetery in Boston, to meet the mid-19th century city dweller's desire for a romanticized rural landscape to escape to.

The landscape, built for the living, as well as the dead, is typified by ponds, grottos, bowers, and a variety of plantings among the tombs and monuments. Many of Maine's statesmen, military, and civic leaders are interred in Mount Hope Cemetery, along with some infamous characters whose legends still survive.

The tour starts at the Cemetery Superintendent's Office, 1048 State Street, Bangor, and takes you through the historical cemetery. $5 for non-members; Free to BMHC members and children under 12.

This year’s Cool Sounds Concert Series kicked off in downtown Bangor last night, starting with an outdoor market at West Market Square, followed by a performance from Bruce Nye the Elvis Guy. Vendors ranged from empanadas from Thistles Restaurant to hand crafted jewelry to eccentric sculptures.

Colorful finger puppets and wooden dolls catch the eye at the Fern House Studio table. Christina Heiniger has been making art for six years.

You wouldn’t know these are scarf necklaces at first sight! This vendor saw a similar design elsewhere and decided to give it a whirl.

The King of Rock & Roll made an appearance in the Pickering Square Garage, performing some of his favorite hit songs to over 100 people. The concert was moved to the garage to protect Elvis’s luscious locks from passing rain showers.

Elvis got everyone swinging their hips! (Or, as he put it, wiggling their chairs.) Constantly weaving throughout the audience in his signature attire, he left a trail of scarves, leis, and beaded necklaces with his fans.

Audience members, both young and old, became part of the show as Elvis asked questions, danced with them, and singled ladies out with a serenade. There’s no denying the Elvis was a real crowd pleaser!

Catch the outdoor market next week, as well as a concert by the Kayla Wass Band, on June 17th starting at 5 p.m.

Maine Women's Fund leadership luncheon

The women of Maine Ahead magazine were in Portland today at the Maine Women's Fund annual luncheon: Melanie Brooks, managing editor; Jennifer Violette, Julie Kaye, and Tracy O'Clair, sales team; and Melinda Hart, administrative assistant. Since Maine Ahead was a cornerstone sponsor, along with the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram, we were all proud to represent our company.

There were some amazing women from across the state that received awards this year and I wanted to take a moment and introduce them to you...

Kellene O'Hara is this year's Samantha Smith Award Recipient. She was chosen for this award because of her active role on the Caribou High School Civil Rights Team. Kellene is currently leading the team in the production of a training video, which the Attorney General's Office will use in Civil Rights student trainings statewide. She has been the project manager for World Aids Day and Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week and has been instrumental in creating and tabulating a school-wide harrassment survey, which shaped several other awareness activities. Congrats Kellene!

Karen Mills, Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Association, was chosen for the Tribute to Women in Industry (TWIN) Award because she has been an active hands-on investor in and successful manager of small businesses for over 25 years. She has distinguished herself as a passionate advocate for small business policy that encourages innovation, economic development, and job creation.

The Sarah Orne Jewett Award Recipient this year is Hannah Pingree. The Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives was chosen because of her political, community, and professional work. In addition to serving in the Legislature, Hannah works as the development director for Waterman's Community Center in her hometown of North Haven. She also serves as a board member for Midcoast Mental Health, as the legislative rep. for the Zone C Lobster Council, as the co-chair of the "Midcoast Magnet" creative economy initiative, as as a member of the State Work Action Tactics Team.

Bangor Greendrinks at Hampden Natural Foods

Last night, Mindy Hart and I represented Bangor Metro at the second Bangor Greendrinks event held at Hampden Natural Foods. The owners revamped an old garage and turned it into a spectacular three-walled event space decorated with hanging flowers provided by Hummingbird Hollow.

Greendrinkers were tempted with food by Ann Marie's Kitchen and locally produced Cupelo wine and Black Bear Brewery beer. It was a great turnout and I for one look forward to attending more of these fun events. If you love the environment mark your calendars for the next Greendrinks event: July 6th. Place is TBD. West Market Festival 2010

A little rain couldn't stop Bangor's third annual West Market Festival this past weekend. People of all ages gathered downtown for a day of music, comedy, and fashion -- not to mention puddle jumping.

Music was the biggest attraction with six different acts taking the stage. The Sophomore Beat pumped up the crowd early in the day with an upbeat groove you could dance to. Sam and Yuri also performed featuring strong harmonies and a comforting acoustic sound.

The Goodnight Process blew the crowd away with their power pop tunes and witty stage banter. (FYI - lead singer, Dean Ford, was a vegan for 5 years until he had a sausage at this year's festival!)

Sennyo kept the show going during band set-ups, dancing with hula hoops and Buugeng - a handcrafted magnetized wooden visual performance tool shaped like an "S".

Improv comedy group The Focus Group performed at the festival, doing their best to keep it a family friendly show. Acts included sports broadcaster auditions for Fenway Park, rock star personas, and sounding off on the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

All eyes were on the runway during the retail and designer fashion shows.

Bella Luna and Main Street Alternative presented provocative and exciting apparel, using dramatic colors and eccentric styles. The designer show featured the works of Sophronia Design, Jessi Sader of FX Dressed, and Michael Shyka.

Asticou Azalea Garden

If you're looking for a place with a little zen and a lot of photo opportunity, head to Northeast Harbor on MDI. There you'll find the Asticou Azalea Garden and nearby Thuya Garden.

I was down camping in Bar Harbor with my family over Memorial Day Weekend and we decided to take a picnic lunch. We picked up some sandwiches in town and headed over to Northeast Harbor and the Azalea Garden. Unfortunately we had to eat our lunch outside of the garden as no picnicking is allowed on the premises. And after one step through the gates tells you why: it's completely pristine.

Had my three-year-old niece been with us we would have spent the next half-hour looking for fairy houses because, indeed, this garden looked like a pixie paradise.

These zen-like statues were peppered throughout the garden, as were stone benches to sit on and relax.

A closer look.

A few years ago my friend got married at the Asticou Inn. We all gathered in the garden for photos after the ceremony and before the reception. The garden is lovingly maintained by the Mount Desert Land and Garden Preserve which runs on donations. The photos were fantastic! Any bride getting married on MDI should seriously consider heading to one of these gorgeous gardens for photos.

Winners of The Underpants Contest!

We got a lot of great stories in from our readers for this contest. Sharing your most embarrassing underpants fiasco with the world takes a certain sense of humor and we're so glad for the giggles.

Our winners were: Amy Blackstone and Dawn DeBois. Each received two tickets to see The Underpants at the Penobscot Theatre this weekend and we hope they enjoy the show as much as Melanie did (she won't stop talking about it...)

Amy and Dawn's winning stories after the jump....

Amy's Story:

Almost exactly one year ago today I drove to Quebec City with two friends for some weekend fun. Apparently we looked suspicious because when we got to the border crossing we were asked by Canadian officials to park and exit our car so it could be searched. Two border patrol guards tore the car apart -- they removed cushions, moved seats, pulled out all of our luggage and went through every item.

As we observed the search we saw one of the guards lean into the front seat and open the glove compartment. As that happened my friend who owns the car screamed "Oh no!" We looked at her and then looked in the direction of her mortified stare. One of the guards had just plucked a pair of underpants out of the glove box and was dangling them in front of his face (inspecting them? I'm not sure). Apparently they'd been in there for months after she'd removed them on the drive home from work one day because they were "too hot and itchy." The guard eventually returned them to the glove box and we were invited to proceed into Canada.

Dawn's Story:

On my way, on a recent day, to "the account" of all accounts
My boss was riding shotgun, which made it more pronounced.
I of course got lost, and did far too many U-Turns along the way
Thank God my boss laughed, instead of writing me up without pay.
Pulling into the parking garage with tears in our eyes
Deep breaths, trying to gather our composure, it took multiple tries.
Walking out of the parking garage is where the real story began
As my boss was looking around, and slammed right into a parked van.
Bent over laughing, hysterics abound
Couldn't believe she just did that, laughing without a sound.
"Stop it!" she said. "You're going to make me pee!"
Hmmm, thought I, well then you'd be joining me.
As a squirt leaked out, the damage I did not know -
Please God, please do not let it show!
Walking into the account, my boss completely unaware
I was quietly hoping I didn't smell like a pair of peed-in underwear.
Hello's and intros, a moment to wait for the Senior VP
"Could you direct me to the ladies room? I need to go pee."
Of course my boss followed me, needing to primp and get ready
Thankfully she didn't follow me into my stall, that would have been shady.
Damages assessed: the slacks were good the underpants were shot
So quickly they came off, I was now commando, why not?
Now to hide the peed-in underpants, the trashcan only had a mop
No trash to hide them in, darn, I couldn't just let them drop.
So I did what any smart businesswoman would do
I folded them neatly dry side out (this story is true)
And put them in my Dooney (what would you do?)
Through a lucrative lunch meeting, no one was the wiser
I'm very lucky though, that it hadn't been a geyser!

On Wednesday night I attended a Hands On Technology Class given by Downeast Learning Workshops. Nicole Ouellette from Breaking Even Communications and Matthew Baya from Svaha LLC make up the dynamic duo that is Downeast Learning Workshops. These two local consultants gave a great presentation on Search Engine Optimization.

For two hours a small group of us sat in an upstairs room of the Maine Grind building and got the basics of how to help make our websites more accessible to the spiders that crawl the web. SEO isn't an exact science -- but there are many people out there who make it their life's work to figure out why some websites pop up on the first page of Google and some are never found.

I'm no techie (that's for sure) but Matt and Nicole provided some great tips that were easy to understand and made me take a closer look at all of our sites: Bangor Metro, Maine Ahead, and Real Maine Weddings. Technology changes all the time, and while it's sometimes hard to keep up with it, it's important.

Downeast Learning offers workshops in Ellsworth each month. They are a casual and inexpensive way to get info and ask questions as well as meet new people. Totally worth my time and I look forward to seeing what else they can teach me.

The Underpants!

I went to see this show at the Penobscot Theatre last night and it was AWESOME! I had a smile plastered on my face the entire way through.

The set itself was expertly done. I was amazed at how the entire stage was completely transformed into a funky apartment. I loved how the set designers even made nosy Gertrude's upstairs apartment viewable. The colors were crazy, the costumes were perfect, and the acting was hilarious.

The play is set in Germany and originally written by German Carl Sternheim. This adaptation was written by funnyman Steve Martin. It starts out with Theo and Louise Maske discussing the embarrassing event involving Louise's underpants falling down during the king's parade. Two over-the-top characters see her underpants fall and both men, a poet and a barber, end up falling in love with Louise and renting the extra room in the Maske's house and trying to woo her right under the nose of her nagging husband.

The characters were full of energy and played their characters to a tee. It was one of the most enjoyable plays I've ever seen -- not just at the Penobscot Theatre, but anywhere! I urge you to get yourself a ticket (or win one here) and see it for yourself. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Hiking Around Bar Harbor

Yesterday was gorgeous, so Sidekick Shane and I decided to head to Acadia National Park to spend the day in the wilderness before the tourists landed on the island for Memorial Day weekend. First stop: the Schooner Head Overlook. When the tide is out you can hike down into a cave and see some of the best tide pools in the area.

Next stop: the Jordan Pond House for some popovers. Shane had never been there before and I was all too glad to introduce him to one of my favorite spots for pre- or post-hike goodies. Seating wasn't set up outside yet but no worries. We had a great view of Jordan Pond from our table inside. Two glasses of iced tea and four popovers later we were ready to hit the trail.

We decided to hike the Great Head Trail so that we could chill out on Sand Beach after we were through. It's a relatively short hike and not too steep.

It's a good hike for families though small children will need some help. The views from the top are gorgeous but the drop is sharp and steep. Parents will have to keep youngsters on the trail and away from the cliffs. We were captured by the view and wandered off the trail a bit but we found it again with no problem.

We loved the multi-colored rocks on this hike and the cool seaweed in the tide pools. These red spiders, tiny as they might be, really stood out among all the green.

The fog was rolling in onto Sand Beach and cooled us down as we sunned ourselves on the warm rocks at the end of the hike. The trail ends right at the beach so there's no reason to not shed your shoes and socks and bury your feet in the sand for a bit. We stopped into Gringo's off of Cottage Street in Bar Harbor to get a delicious smoothie for the ride back to Bangor. It was a perfect day in my book!

"Heist School Vacation"

River City Cinema presents "Heist School Vacation." Featuring some of the most ingenious (and not so ingenious) criminal masterminds—and their law-protecting nemeses, in six classic cinema capers.

June 25 - The Ladykillers — 1955: A gang of five oddball criminals rent a two-bedroom apartment in an isolated cul-de-sac from an eighty-something widow, Mrs. Wilberforce, with three pet parrots. The groups mastermind, Professor Marcus, tells the widow that they are members of an amateur string quartet and would like to use the rooms to hone their musical skills. In reality, they are plotting to rob a bank and plan to use Mrs. Wilberforce’s naiveté in Victorian sensibilities to their advantage. However, when the gang sets out to kill Mrs. Wilberforce, they run in to a series of problems and in the end get what they deserve.
July 2 - The Killing — 1956: After spending five years in Alcatraz, Johnny Clay decides to continue a life of crime, but the risk has to be worth the punishment. Clay proceeds to mastermind a brilliant criminal scheme to seal $2 million from a local racetrack, which will harm no one. The one thing that prevents Clay from successfully completing his mission is a cohort’s greedy wife and her ruthless boyfriend.
July 9 - Ocean's 11 — 1960: Danny Ocean and friend Jimmy Foster recruit their buddies from World War II to rob the five biggest casinos in Las Vegas in one night. The plan is to knock out the electricity supply to the city, and for electrical expert, Tony Bergdorf, to wire emergency generators to open doors to all of the cashier’s offices. The men take up jobs in the casinos—entertainers, waiters, busboys—and all goes well. That is until Bergdorf has a heart attack in the middle of the heist.
July 16 - The Italian Job — 1969: Having just left prison, Charlie Croker gets a big job: to steal $4 million of gold arriving in Italy from China. His job needs financing, so Croker turns to a Mafia boss, Mr. Bridger, who is in prison. A clever plan is hatched to distract authorities while Croker and his gang try get away in three Mini Coopers.
July 23 - The Sting — 1973: Johnny Hooker, a young con man, and partner in crime, Luther Coleman, pull a con job and net themselves a huge roll. However, the man they conned is Doyle Lonigan, a big time crime boss. A crooked cop, Snyder, threatens to turn Hooker over to Lonigan unless he gets paid off. Hooker obeys and tries to warn Coleman but is too late. Henry Gondorf, a friend of Colemans, hears about what happened and decides to assemble a gang to con Lonigan. When everything starts falling into place, they find out that the hit on Hooker and Snyder, which Hooker paid off, was paid off in counterfeit money.
July 30 - The Return of the Pink Panther — 1975: The “Pink Panther” diamond is stolen once again from Lugash and a white glove is left at the scene of the crime, which leads everyone to believe that The Phantom did it. This surprises everyone because they thought The Phantom had retired; even The Phantom is surprised because he didn’t do it. The Phantom sets out from the south of France to Lugash to find the diamond and clear his name. Meanwhile, infamous French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau is call in to find the diamond and he immediately sets off for the south of France. When Claudine, The Phantom’s wife, hears of this, she leads Clouseau on a false trail, and, as usual, Clouseau causes mayhem as he tries to find the diamond.
